What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid substance that is used to treat and prevent dental cavities. It is made of two main components: silver, which has antimicrobial properties, and fluoride, which helps to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent further decay. This powerful combination makes SDF an effective tool to fight against tooth decay and cavities.

How Does Silver Diamine Fluoride Work?

The process of SDF treatment is quick and easy. After making sure the area is dry, Dr. Guthrie brushes the SDF onto the surface of the tooth. When applied to a cavity or an area with tooth decay, it works in two different ways:

  • Silver Ions: The silver in SDF acts as an antimicrobial agent, which means it is very effective in killing the bacteria that causes cavities. By preventing bacterial growth, SDF stops tooth decay from getting any worse.

  • Fluoride: Fluoride is a fantastic way to both strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities.

Benefits Of Silver Diamine Fluoride

At James River Family Dentistry, we aim to provide you with advanced preventative treatment options, including silver diamine fluoride, to keep your teeth in the best possible shape. SDF offers many benefits for adults and children alike. Some of the many benefits include:

  • Non-Invasive: Unlike traditional dental treatments such as fillings or crowns, SDF application does not use any drilling or anesthesia. It is ideal for young children or nervous patients, as it is painless and non-invasive!

  • Cost-Effective: SDF treatment is significantly more affordable compared to other treatments. By stopping cavities from getting worse at an early stage, it helps prevent the need for expensive and invasive restorative treatments in the future.

  • Quick And Painless: The application is quick and painless. It involves no drilling, which means it is an excellent choice for children or those with dental anxiety.

  • Versatility: SDF can be used to treat multiple teeth in a single visit, making it a convenient option for patients with multiple cavities or areas of tooth decay.

  • Preventative Benefits: In addition to treating existing cavities, SDF can also be applied to healthy teeth as a preventative measure. By strengthening enamel and inhibiting bacterial growth, SDF helps reduce the risk of future cavities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Silver Diamine Fluoride

At James River Family Dentistry, we want you to feel at ease about your decision to receive treatment to prevent your cavities from worsening. That’s why we have outlined some of our most frequently asked questions about SDF below. If you have any additional questions, we are happy to answer them at your next visit or over the phone.

While SDF is an excellent option for many patients, if you have a silver allergy or gingivitis, we do not recommend receiving this treatment.

SDF treatment turns the area a darker color. If you are concerned about the appearance of your teeth, or if your cavities are in very visible areas, it may not be the right option for you. SDF is a great treatment for cavities that are in harder to see areas, such as your back molars.

While the treatment is pain-free, it may cause slight discomfort, including minor gum irritation. A rare side effect is temporary staining, but it will fade in a few weeks.

SDF treatment is unfortunately not covered by insurance. However, it is a lower-cost treatment than having to receive restorative treatments down the road.

The ADA recommends retreating as needed over a span of 2 years. Prevention is key—we want to ensure that your cavities do not worsen.
