give kids a smileDid you know that almost 19% of children ages 5-19 years have untreated cavities? That equals 1 in 4 children who have untreated dental decay, which is now considered the most common chronic illness among school aged children. The pain of untreated cavities can cause children to miss school or not be able to focus on their studies while they are present. In fact, the children who suffer from untreated dental issues are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem and low grades.

What are we doing to help?

James River Family Dentistry is joining with the American Dental Association Foundation’s program, “Give Kids A Smile.” This program is dedicated to providing free dental treatment to children who are in need of oral health care. The “Give Kids A Smile” program was launched in 2003 and since then, more than 5 million children have received free dental care from more than 30,000 participating dental professionals nationally.

National “Give Kids A Smile” Day takes place the first Friday in February. Although that’s the official date, many providers will be working throughout the month of February to help underserved children in the community with their dental needs. Dr. Guthrie and James River Family Dentistry will be providing services in February and scheduling can be done by contacting 804-323-4200.

If your child is in need of dental care or you know of a child who is, please contact us, James River Family Dentistry at 804-323-4200 for more information about “Give Kids A Smile Day.” We want to make sure that every child has a chance at a beautiful smile and a lifetime of dental health.
